Molate in Richmond, as Calvin Fong tells of of his father’s shrimping operations in Richmond and Oakland in the 1930s and 40s, and Mike Taggart talks about the physical legacy of this obscured part of California history in relation to his archaeological work on the Pt. Molate shrimp camp site.

The Richmond Chinese shrimp camp was one of many that once ringed San Francisco Bay. Richmond was the first landing site in the series of research and chronicling voyages we made on the NPS’s replica 19th c. shrimp junk Grace Quan last year, to retrace this overlooked history.
Calvin Fong retired from 33 years with the US Army Corps of Engineers to devote himself to researching his father’s past legacy.
Mike Taggart, RPA, led a team of archaeologists who excavated and identified the 19th century Chinese shrimp camp near Pt. Molate.
